Building new singletrack at end of Charlie canyon. Need more hands on deck. Going out monday 11-2 and possibly friday 11-6. Trying to connect old trail to top of fireroad near the towers. Making the trail so you can climb or descend it. Trail begins at end of Charlie you head right into the canyon just passed the fireroad that heads up to platueau open area on the normal tapia climb. If you are climbing the fireroad to connect charlie and tapia look over to your left and that is the new trail in the canyon below. Once you get to the gnarly up hill that the motos go up the trail makes a hard RIGHT TURN and goes up the canyon. More hands on deck needed for brush clearing etc. I have many tools and can meet anyone out there. I will try to attach pictures of the trail so far. You can call me anytime at 805-338-9696 on my cell and discuss. Thanks...Randy

Hey Randy, Would like to help with the trail but my time would be limited to weekends. If this works in your plans, email me. I want to give back since I ride Tapia/Charlie almost every weekend and would like it to be available for as long as possible before the developers get ahold of it . John

gonna possibly be out there friday. i have a dentist appt. at 10am in studio city. Tom is most likely going to be there with a few friends. call me before friday and i will give you the head count of who is heading up. 805-338-9696 anyone else interested in helping call We finished another .125 miles of hillside and creek today. Now we are at the narrow canyon section where we need to cross the creek a few times. not too many bushes just need to make transitions smooth to keep momentum up and be able to climb from the bottom. here is a link to the garmin navigation i did today. hope it works. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/17856235

You and Tom are animals. This can be a very sweet trail. It goes relatively fast, but we could knock this thing out much quicker with some bodies there. The sooner we get it done, the sooner we'll have what could be the funnest slice of trail out there yet.

You got that right. So far planning to go out again this friday. Need more bodies to help. If you get out there and work we need to keep the trail as "free from curves" as possible. The naturual curve of the canyon will rob enough momentum. If we keep the trail as straight as possible the canyon will do the rest. About .50 miles to go and we will be ready to ride. BUT....... we need bodies. Call me if interested in helping at 805-338-9696 Thanks...Randy

Hey guys, Tom told me about your site a couple of days ago so I decided to register Not 100% sure I'll make it Friday, but it is my day off and I need to ride, so I might as well work on the trail too. Looking forward to meeting everyone !

I've been itchin' to do some trail building. I would love to pitch in, but usually don't know if I have time until that day. If I go up alone, do you guys have the line you want marked, so I know the plan on where to work? I was about to start a little diversion off Kona that looks like it would provide a nice sort of half-pipe feel but I can put that on the backburner for now. It's always more motivating to have a whole crew for a project. Solo trail building goes so slow.

Shoot...........if I had known that you were bringing burritos on Friday I would stayed a bit longer ! That's slow hard work making a trail ! Tom told me you guys added quite a bit of distance after we left.... although it's still a long way to go before the trail is completed. Gotta say that the bit of trail that is completed is a lot fun. Hopefully I'll be able to make it back out there next weekend.

Can't make Friday....gotta work, however, I do have every other Friday off, so I'll make it a point to make time to work on the trail at least a few hours whenever possible. Unfortunately I usually don't get home until after dark on weekdays so I can't help on workdays...although I did go up there last Thursday night just to check it out........totally different looking at night !! If you get a chance, take some pictures and post them !

pictures from today. This is the area at the creek crossing with all the broken trees before. It took alot of clearing but we did it. Tom will be out there friday am early. I may head out a couple more days during this week to clear some brush in the creek ahead. Looks like we need to ride the creek for about .10 mile through the narrows and then we can get out.

Dan and I went out tonite and made a narrow bridge with huge rocks and old branches on the sides. If you want to span the gap with a metal bridge it would be 11ft...12ft would be a litte long. (we measured with a tape measure) This should be ok for a good while but it is narrow. The only way to go from this point IMO is to head up the creek until we get out of the narrows. Alot of brush but it goes really quickly. Jeff has an electric chainsaw and My powersaw has three batteries and many extra blades for a days work. Also loppers gets most of the small stuff. We went up the creek and cleared a path until we got to an "up" section with big rocks on the other side. I can go out more during the week to cut and work but I cant make it friday. My son's school is closed because of the holiday on wednesday and I need to spend the day with him. If anyone is taking a truck up there be aware that I saw the gate closed the other night and some guys with motos and trucks were stuck up there. So drop stuff off and head back out. We may need a bridge further up the canyon but we wont know until we get there. Our bridge is solid but narrow...that is ok with me....for now at least. If anyone is thinking about going out during the week give me a call. I should be available after nine am except thursday I can not come.

Hello all: Finally got my user account set up. Pictures of the bridge look great i am stoked to go out and ride it friday. The game plan is to head out to work the trail at about 8am friday 11/13 i will be able to stay until 2 looking to make another big push. I am working on getting 2 of my buds to help out. i am going to email the coc mtb class again and see if i can get one or two of those guys to come out and help. any hand is a good hand as far as i am concerned. The steel bridge at creek X seems to be workin well... i think that wood bridges will work better higher up the creek as they are easier to haul in and build in place. have a few contacts on lumber so i will keep you posted. hope to see you guys on the trail. Tom

Well turn out for the last build day was worse than Kirks golden eagle day!!! But salvation is not far..... I am proposing a burn off thanksgiving build day. Friday after thanksgiving say 830-9 meet at the castaic sports complex and ride out to the trail. The trail is coming along great and you WILL have fun riding it. Most of the tools necessary are yourself and a decent pair of gloves. Please post if you are able, willing or need further information. Once completed this trail will open up lots of options for riders in the area so lets try and finish this thing ASAP so we can enjoy it!!

Went out today and finished transition from creek to steep UP need to cut it left then up so the transition is not too steep to climb. Want to keep in mind that we are trying to make this a two way trail. Need to keep the Option to climb up so that more ride options are available. Need all hands on deck to finish this thing. Tools are at the end of the last creek section before you climb on the left side if you want to work. Call me if going out as I can join during the week only. 805-338-9696 is my cell no. I will post pics of today's work.

We will be out building on Wednesday the 16th. I am heading out around 830-9 am and will be there for the better part of the day usually leave around 2-3 depending on how hard the work is and how many hands we can get out there. Randy has been able to get out there a lot and got a bunch of work done. The rain from this week should show us how our building techniques are holding up and also how the bridges are doing. looking at what randy has scoped on his moto we are getting really close hopefully we can get this thing done in 2-3 more build days if we can get enough people out there. Let me know if you have any question or anyone else that can help we have plenty of tools at the trail so just ride out with food and water.

Hey you guys, the trail looks great in the pictures. Sorry I'm unable to be out there building with you, my shoulder is "jacked". I'm looking forward to riding this new stuff when I heal. Maybe you should talk to the guy from the Lions Club that promoted the race a couple months back, he's planning to do more races next year.

That guy would be me....or at least one of the guys ! I helped Tom one Firday a few weeks ago, however, I haven't had a chance to go back yet. Regarding the Lions; I've told Bob (the other Lion for the Bike Ride) and his wife about the trail and they are excited about it and wanted to help build it, but it's just a timing issue for most of us....goes without saying this is a busy time of year ! I know the objective is to finish before the new year, but I can say that the only time I could help is on the weekends, and until after Christmas, my weekends are totally booked. I have talked to Bob about working the trail and he and his wife are pretty much in the same boat. I can say that I do have the week after Christmas off, so I should be available to help, and I will continue to keep Bob (and his wife) in the loop too. Looking forward to hitting the trail soon to see how it's coming along.

Still need help in the final push. Me and Tom so far. Bud helped out and pushed us forward a bit and thanks again for the help! With me and Tom only it will take another five full work days to finish the trail. I was out there yesterday for 6 hours and today with Tom for another 6. We got it moved forward alot today. ....see attached pics... call me if you can go out during the week at 805-338-9696. Thanks..Randy Ps...I think If we can pull together a five man team we can do it in two days...three max...lets stop working and start riding.

You were right....nice coffee can holes....from the four footed turd dropping hole making .... arggggghhhhhhhhh Went around the sign and makes me upset but I guess that is what we have to deal with until the trail hardens... almost there....thanks for posting the video... Just so everyone knows this trail will end up by the towers so you have another way down besides Kona and Burn victim New tentative trail name is COLON CANYON.... see google picture to see proposed out to towers. suggestions welcome.

OK SO HERE IS THE WAY I SEE IT COMING OUT AND THE STATUS OF TRAIL AS OF TODAY. Using existing cut fire lines by fire crews we can punch it up and be able to climb around mountain and up to side of plateau and make it fun dropping in using cut lines from the powerlines. Just need to make small transition at top and bottom to make it happen. suggestions welcome. THIS VIEW OF GOOGLE EARTH SHOWS THE AREA THE BEST SO YOU CAN GET AN IDEA.

Charlie Canyon runs parallel to, and north of Tapia Canyon in Castaic. The end of this new trail is at 34 30'10" N, 118 34'15" W . Punch these coordinates into Google Earth.

It's been about a month and a 1/2 since I worked on the trail, so I finally got to check it out yesterday morning and can only say "WOW" ! It's amazing how far it has progressed. The damage done by the horses was frustrating.....the sign was down when we got there, so we put it back up when we left. Hopefully the upcoming rain will be just enough to pack the trail down and not wash it way. Great job and keep it up !

ok as dan stated...trail is complete. It runs up to the right of the oak tree but keeps going straight and up to the fireroad. We took advantage of a pre cut horsie line. When you are heading down fireroad north from powerlines look on the left for the Red ribbon on the bushes for the entry. You mcloed is in the canyon near the final oak tree on the other side...to the left as you drop the first drop with our other tools. I have left several shovels along the way in plain view so that someone can make refinements as they see fit or make any repairs from motos or coffee can holes from my pretty pony. Also I am posting a sign just inside the trail (not seen from the entrance) on each end that will ask people to tread lightly on the trail. I will moto them out in the next few days. Put the shovels back when done so someone else can use them. Lets fine tune this thing and make it awesome. I want to add a berm at the beginning of the canyon when it turns hard right, you lose alot of speed and a berm can help keep that up. Ride it and you will know what i am talking about. 1st 1/10th of a mile in or so...from the big oak tree. I took a video and clipd it so it would not be so long....here is the link on youtube.... NOW PUT THE WORD OUT SO THAT EVERYONE CAN RIDE THIS AND BREAK IT IN...WANT IT TO BE RIDEABLE BOTH WAYS.

GREAT JOB to everyone that was involved. With a little luck and just a little rain, I'll checkout the entire trail this weekend. Depending on how the trail develops in the next few months, I'd like to incorporate it into the Lion's next charity bike race that will probably be held sometime around April/May. We're currently checking the schedules of other biking events and will decide on the date of the next race within the next couple of weeks. Also.......THANKS for making a new trail to ride !

Ok I am a youtube rookie so to make up for it I am posting the video with music now instead of you hearing my broken fork "clunking" in the background. Riding trail tomorrow at 10:30 meeting at corrals. Need to post two signs and cut a fun option trail under the towers and down the two ledges before the entry on the fireroad. HERE IT IS WITH MUSIC....ENJOY!

Sweet new trail guys. Thanks for all of the hard work. We probably saw more people riding the trail today then pitched in the whole time you guys were working on it. By the way, what is the official name: Colon Canyon, G-Spot, G-Out??? Can't wait to see how the trail matures.

Fantastic job!!! I had not been out on it for quite a while and all I can say is WOW!!!. What a great bit of trail we now have. I can only hope it survives this impending series of stroms enough that we can get it back in shape. That top section is AWESOME!!!

Need help from anyone that has building experience. Dan should be able and I am putting a call out to anyone who can help. I want to put a Horsie bridge on each end of the canyon so the horses can not gain access up the canyon. On the way up where the current metal bridge is we should change it to a "ladder style" bridge so the horses can not get around it. We can then move that bridge forward to another needed location where the small rock bridges may blow out from the rain. On the top there is a "mattress bridge" we made from sticks and a half pipe over a steep gap. This would be an ideal location for the second "ladder style bridge" If a bridge is put here no horse can get by. SO I am asking anyone to step up and make two ladder bridges from treated wood or metal we can carry in from the top and bottom. We can get a truck out there and it will just take two guys to walk them in and place them. For measurement they should be at least 12ft. long and wide enough to ride your mtb at speed over. Need them to be really sturdy as the sections we will place them in are going to be fast g-out style sections. Also...Make sure you break in the new top section that Kevin and I cut in from the towers yesterday. Rather than riding the fireroad down from the towers go directly under the towers. I put some red string on a bush to show you the way. It is directly under the towers...then down to fireroad and then to next plateau and down...after second entry to fireroad I want to go slighlty right and will blaze a trail with moto before entering trail at top where I place a blue beer can to show the entrance to G-out canyon...have fun and use next weeks rainy time to build some horsie bridges....THE HORSES WILL DESTROY THAT TRAIL MORE THAN MOTOS IN MY OPINION.

Saw this on empty beer and wondered if something similar could serve our purposes. . . . Just wondering out loud. . . . Rode it again today. Liked it even more this time. Met some riders I hadn't seen before and took them through. One of them had his Go-Pro running and is supposed to send me a link when he gets it posted.

Are you referring to the blue beer can propped up at the entrance? I just found it nearby and put it there. If we make the entry point too big the motos will start hitting it. Did you take the entry point below the towers on the two new lines we cut in? When you get the video email to me.

Nice video, but I would try taking one in the morning so the sun is at your back. I'm optomistic about possible damage so far as the rain has been spread out with breaks in between. Keeping fingers crossed. . . . .

Tom and I are heading out tuesday or wednesday to check out damage and do repairs. We are riding up fireroad and stopping at top oak tree and walking in to fix problem areas. I am bringing sandbags to fill and use as future water barriers or hillside support. I may moto them up. We can see where the water damaged the trail and make adjustments to secure it for the future. I also want to move the top sign to a spot where you dont just go speeding by and dont see it....but I dont want it too close to existing trail to draw attention from anyone...drawing them in... If anyone can go out Tuesday or Wednesday lemme know.

Rode it twice this weekend. It's in surprisingly good shape even though it has seen quite a bit of moto traffic the past couple days. For the most part, it just gets better and better every time I ride it. If it looks this good after what we had last week, the long term outlook is good IMHO. According to my sppedometer, the trail is right around 2 miles from fire road to fire road. Speaking of fire roads, the Charlie Canyon fire road is in less than stellar shape right now. With water flowing through the wash sections, the sand is real soft and sloppy. There are some big pits of standing water here and there as well and some sections are getting sandy already

Went out two days this week to fix some bridges. Took sand bags and layed them out on the top of all the bridges and first two g-outs to stop the soft ground from mushing and creating a deep line. See before and after pictures attached. Ran into Bud out there today on the way up Kona. He put in a berm at the top in a sandy section but I think it is too big. We need to cut it down a little as that thing looks like waist high!! I want to try to keep the canyon looking as natural as possible so that if anyone goes up there they wont complain. If we put in big jumps and berms then they may be upset. IMO we need to be low key and just work on ways to keep the flow up without making huge berms and jumps and bridges. Chime in and lemme know what you are thinking. I wanted to get this work done before the two days of rain on friday and saturday. cheers!!

Rode it tonight. . . . Definitely helped to fill in the bottom of the g-outs. The trail is a hoot at night and it seemed to be in pretty good shape

G-out is holding up extremely well! Rhode it thursday 3/4/10 a couple of times and it is still pretty muddy in spots but super fun and breaking in well. hope to see more people out there enjoying it.

Rode up G-Out this evening to get my shovel. Took it up to the top of Kona so I can start filling in some of those nasty ruts there. Touched up five or six places on my way out of G-Out. Hiking up that trail with a bike and a shovel is not fun , but had to be done. Hopefully I'll get out Tuesday, but I won't be starting until 5:30 or so.
