Did a spur of the moment ride today on Golden Eagle. I was tempted to ride up the trail from Sandberg figuring that the sand was still moist and packed down. Then I remembered my gravitational limitations and traversed over to the fs road and went up the usual way. Most of the road was nice hardpack; almost like pavement, with only brief areas of sand. There was still some piles of snow at the top but plenty of muddy dirt to ride on.
I skipped the last 1 mile section of singletrack before the top of the trail by the big oak tree because the snow was deep, slushy and impassable. The southern exposed trail however, was outstanding! Nice tacky soil with plenty of traction and only a few small patches of snow to blast through. The sandy lower part was well packed down with more great traction but I was still glad I climbed up the road. The descent was sweet! I could rail the turns without worrying about sliding out on the usual dry loose stuff. The next few weeks are the time to ride this trail. There are even a few poppies out this early! Let me know if any of you want to ride it. It could use a little trimming of brush but it wasn't bad at all.
With daylight savings coming next week, I can do some after school rides around the Antelope Valley area. I'll post when I can plan ahead enough. That Acton trail is a great spring ride as well for a weekend or even after work. I'll keep in touch.
