Yes we did this route on the DPB

Do you have a better route...the way we did it, it was all XC with no real payoff.

???How about up Burkhart trail to the saddle and back? My friend and I did it and didn't makit all the way up due to time constraints but would love to do it with like minded people. He seems to like santa monica mtns and arroyo seco area. I can only go on Sun/Mon and occasional any other day. I live in Palmdale and don't want to drive too far to ride when there's many trails nearby. occasion14
I guess I can do 5deer at 0730. Are you still on?

Please reply

The South Fork trail ain't worth it IMHO.  I've done it once in 15 yrs.  I did it out and back from the campground up to Hwy 2 at Islip Saddle (I think) which is about 7 miles if memory serves.  Boulder slides and other slides of just about everything else with some severe exposure to near vertical cliffs make it slow going.  Very treacherous.  The upper half is more hardpack but kind of boring.

I'd recommend Manzanita, Punchbowl (Devil's Chair section) and Burkhardt.  Great trails that don't get crowded.  I've long desired to do a massive shuttle ride from Blue Ridge Trail, down Manzanita to South Fork Campground, then the east end of the Punchbowl trail to Burkhardt.  Sections of an optional trail could also be taken between Blue Ridge and Manzanita for the risk takers!  I've never done the whole thing in one shuttle but if anyone's up for it, let me know.

I'll describe it from the north end cause that's where I ride it.  From Devil's Punchbowl County Park, there's a trail that goes southwest to Devil's Chair.  The Burkhardt splits off from this trail about a mile from the parking lot.  It traverses west about 3 miles, crosses a creek and then climbs many switchbacks and about 3 more miles to the Burkhardt Saddle.  I have always turned around here.  The climb is very steep and I walk most of it.  From the Saddle, it drops gradually with very loose terrain to end at the PCT near Buckhorn Campground.

Going to the Saddle is worth it and better climbers could certainly pedal the entire climb but I only go there a couple times a year.  I usually go from the Punchbowl and ride out and back to the Devil's Chair to the east and the Burkhardt to the west as far as the windmill before the climb to the saddle.  That's about 13 miles but the ride can be extended in either direction.  The trail east goes about 4 more miles to South Fork CG and the bottom of Manzanita trail.  The Burkhardt goes west up to the saddle and beyond.

Let me know if you want to ride up there and I'll join you!

Correct maddog, it's just the way you described it. I will join you guys if you're up to it. I'd like to make it to the saddle and beyond if my batteries last.

There's some pics at <http://www.socalmtb.com/socal/trails/devils.htm>

and a trail map at <http://www.devils-punchbowl.com/pages/map.html>

check it out. For now I will meet you guys at 5deer at 0730 by FS 6N08 on Bouquet Cyn Rd.

sorry Hey mtbr I'm really sorry about that and sorry that I didn't get back to you. Since I stayed home and not rode I went and didn't my husbandly duty and attended church w/family and visited my father who was in hospital the last 3 days and that's why I didn't get back to you on your reply. Still have to either find someone to fix my door (Yeah Right on sunday) or replace the torsion spring myself.

Either way I feel like crap about this.

Have you checked out the weblinks i posted earlier? If not do so and the pics on socalmtb.com.
If after that you still want to check it out we'll go. Like maddog posted earlier it is kinda treacherous if you're not careful and the climb before the saddle was 75% walking. We got home exhausted and my legs were burning. But if you want to we'll go, just need to warm up before we start 'cause the start of the trail is nothing but climb.

So if you want we'll go if not check out "Chilao figure 8 loop" on the same website ad we'll do that one or even Roundtop/Pacifico?

Let me know. hope your local ride was cool.

I guess I didn't miss anything after all!  Our computer was down with some virus early last week and we were in Kernville over Veterans Day weekend so I've been out of the loop for a while.  I have approval to ride this weekend  so if you want to ride the Punchbowl/Burkhardt trail, let me know.  Sunday works best for me.  If you guys want to go, we can get a new thread started.

occasion14 You got it, I can do Burkhart Trail Sun Nov 19 and Sun Nov 26 I can do Five Deer. Have never done that one or the Bouquet Singletrack near Quarry Road. Done Golden Eagle and loved it I can do that one also. blob8

Oh, by the way I don't remember if you mentioned road riding also. I love road riding and one nice ride is through Leona Valley on Lake Elizabeth Rd or Pine Canyon Rd. from The Rock Inn at Lake Hughes to 3 points or all the way to The Sandbergs near the Golden Eagle Trail. So if you're open minded I can do any rides near S. Clarita/Antelope Valley.

Love to hear from you on these.

Hope You had a great time at Kernville.
